Following diuresis the patient continued to have a left pleural effusion. Thoracentesis performed on 10-27-03 revealed no infection but he developed a left pneumothorax and had a chest tube placed which did not result in significant improvement of his respiratory status. A work-up for pulmonary embolus was begun on 10-29-03 but was not completed because the patient developed a bradyarrhythmia from which he did not recover.
