A work-up for pulmonary embolus was begun on 10-29-03 but was not completed because the patient developed a bradyarrhythmia from which he did not recover.

An autopsy was performed.

Aorta opened from the posterior aspect, showing the infrarenal aneurism in-situ.
Sections of the heart showing amorphous pink material on H&E.
Sections of the heart showing positive staining with Congo Red.
The same section of the heart is stained with trichrome to show the conducting fibers which are enmeshed in the amyloid.
Polarized light shows green birefringence.
Sections of the RLL show amorphous material around vessels and in septae.
This is a vessel in the lung with amorphous pink material.
Sections of lung were stained with Cong Red. Note the staining around the vessel.
The same section of lung stained with Cong Red is polarized here. Note the green birefringence of the pink material.
Section of the spleen with H&E stain.
