In the days following surgery the patient continued to decline. Additional
work up revealed no etiology and cultures remained negative. On 4-7-03
the patient developed swelling and ischemia of the right lower extremity
and he underwent a fasciotomy and thrombectomy. A skin biopsy showed multiple
fibrin thrombi within the capillaries and the coagulopathy continued.
A CT scan of the brain was performed because of continued mental status
decline.
