The patient is a 54-year-old Caucasian male who was admitted on October
28, 2003. At noon on the day of admission the patient had emesis of "coffee-ground"
material and melena. He called for help and was brought to the Emergency
Room where a nasogastric lavage revealed coffee-ground material and further
exam revealed a guaiac positive tarry stool. Laboratory studies were obtained.
