An Autopsy was performed.

The screws were found to be close to but not in the spinal canal and the surrounding bone was softened.
Bone grew Candia albicans and Staphylococcus aureus
The gall bladder was distended and discolored
Gallstones were found lodged in the gall bladder and the cystic duct.
Acute inflammation and Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses were noted.
Higher power of acute inflammation of mucosa with hemorrhage
Region of chronic disease with sinus formation
Alcoholic liver disease was found with cirrhosis and steatosis.
 
Consistent with the history of DIC were thromboses and hemorrhage in the left upper lobe, bowel, and adrenals.
The cause of death was determined to be multiorgan system failure following DIC as a result of sepsis with MRSA originating from the abscess surrounding the spinal hardware with osteomyelitis. The patient also had cholecystitis and cholelithiasis with no evidence of organisms in the bile at the time of autopsy. Alcoholic liver disease and diabetes also played a role in his poor outcome.
