His past medical history included alcoholic cirrhosis; hepatitis A, B, and C viral infections; history of GI bleeding in 1993 and 1998; esophageal varices; peptic ulcer disease; arterial venous malformation of the right colon; and Barrett's esophagitis.

Upon arrival to the MICU, the patient was found to have renal failure and anemia, and was placed on vasopressor support for hypotension. He was cultured at multiple sites and a CT was performed.
