An ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis showed a diffusely infiltrative nodular pattern of the liver and an enlarged prostate. CT scanning confirmed the liver masses, which appeared consistent with metastatic lesions.

The patient declined a tissue diagnosis and opted instead for supportive care. He died at home on May 15, 2003.

His past medical history was significant for peptic ulcer disease, with duodenal stenosis and a partial gastrectomy in 1974. He had his gallbladder removed for benign cholelithiasis in 2002.

The patient's family history was significant for multiple relatives with cancer, including a grandmother and a brother with stomach cancer; a mother with colon cancer; and a grandfather with throat cancer.
