About Dental Education

Dental Education consists of two main divisions:

  • General Practice Residency Program (GPR)
  • Regional Dental Education Program, (RDEP-Creighton program and RDEP "At Large" program) a first year dental program.

General Practice Residency Program

Our General Practice Residency Program has ten positions available each year. Dental Residents are graduates from ADA accredited dental schools and elect to participate in our hospital-based dental residency program. Dental residents work under the direction of our dental faculty. Dr. Craige J. Olson, DDS, is Director of the Dental Clinic and Program Director of the General Practice Residency Program (GPR). Our residents come from all over the U.S. and Canada. The University of Utah has two modern, fully equipped and staffed, dental clinics to accommodate patients and residents: University Hospital Dental Clinic and the Greenwood Health Center Dental Clinic. Residents also participate in rotations at the Community Health Clinics of Salt Lake City, Primary Children's Hospital, and Montezuma Creek Dental Clinic.

Regional Dental Education Program

The Regional Dental Education Program helps provide dental education to twenty Utah resident students each year. Ten Utah resident students are accepted for the RDEP-Creighton program and attend the first year at the University of Utah then attend Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha, Nebraska for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years. Additionally, ten Utah resident students are selected for the RDEP At Large scholarship program. Students selected for the RDEP programs who return to Utah to practice dentistry are eligible for tuition reimbursement funds.

Dr. G. Lynn Powell, DDS, Assistant Dean for Dental Education in the School of Medicine and Chief of Dental Services, supervises all dental education at the University of Utah.
