The School of Medicine is a vital component of the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. Its adjacent buildings house numerous laboratories, many of which are internationally known. More than 700 faculty members in the School of Medicine are involved in some 500 research projects, totaling approximately $60 million in grant funding annually. The University of Utah School of Medicine and University Hospital are a major referral, research, and health professions training center for the six-state intermountain region. Academic and clinical programs are directed by a faculty nationally recognized for leadership in research, teaching, and clinical practice. The administrative offices, classrooms, and laboratories of the School of Medicine, as well as a rehabilitation center, are connected by walkways to the University Hospital. All preclinical instruction takes place in the above mentioned classrooms and laboratories or in the Maxwell M. Wintrobe Education and Research Building with seven stories of laboratory and classroom space.

University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics is the clinical arm of the Unviersity of Utah Health Sciences Center, an organization which brings together the education, research, and patient care programs of the University. The medical staff serves a dual function at the Health Sciences Center, providing patient care as well as serving as faculty of the University's School of Medicine. The collaboration between the hospitals and clinics and the other health sciences components—the medical school; Colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health; and the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library—ensures that patients referred to the University Hospitals and Clinics will benefit from the collective expertise of an entire team of health-care professionals. The 395-bed hospital, Neuropsychiatric Institute, and numerous specialty clinics are a referral center for the 9 million residents of the Intermountain West.
