A listing of all of the facilities that pathology residents are required to rotate through.

Department offices, facilities and full-time faculty are located in the University Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, St. Mark’s Hospital, Intermountain Medical Center, Primary Children’s Medical Center, State Medical Examiner’s Office, and ARUP (Associated Regional and University Pathologists) Laboratories. With a combined bed capacity of 1,700, these institutions generate approximately 260 autopsies, 53,000 surgicals, and 8,800,000 clinical laboratory procedures each year.

University Health Sciences Center / Huntsman Cancer Hospital/Huntsman Cancer Research Institute

Situated in the foothills above Salt Lake City, the University Hospital provides tertiary medical services for Utah and the geographically vast Intermountain West, which includes portions of Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. The Huntsman Cancer Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Research Institute provide inpatient and outpatient care for all types of adult cancers, as well as genetics-focused cancer research. The autopsy, transfusion service and clinical laboratory divisions are located at the University Hospital. The surgical pathology division, including a state of the art gross room, is located at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital. Also at the University Hospital is the resident’s room with a library, computer terminals, study areas and microscopes.

ARUP Laboratories, Inc.

ARUP is a unique for-profit, laboratory owned and operated by the Department of Pathology. ARUP provides all laboratory and Cytology services for the University Health Sciences Center and functions as a leading full service reference laboratory providing esoteric reference testing for clients in all 50 states. Except for the hospital-based laboratory and blood bank/apheresis unit, the laboratory is located in a 290,000 square foot facility in the University’s Research Park, a short distance from the Health Sciences Center. Residents rotate through ARUP for major portions of their clinical training and are thus exposed to the full spectrum of routine and esoteric laboratory testing, as well as new test development, sales and marketing, and lab management. Laboratory Medical Directors are full-time faculty of the University of Utah.

Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC)

Located approximately one-half mile from University Health Sciences Center, the Salt Lake VAMC is one of nine regional referral centers for the Veterans Administration health system, drawing patients from five states. The diverse patient population has an extremely high acuity of illness, and provides a wide range of clinical cases for pathology training. The Pathology Department is located in new quarters adjacent to the laboratory operations. Pathology residents rotate through the autopsy service during their first year of training. All faculty are full-time faculty of the University of Utah.

St. Mark’s Hospital

St. Mark’s Hospital is a 190-bed, privately owned hospital serving the southern portion of Salt Lake City. St. Mark's Hospital was Utah's first hospital when it opened in 1872. Pathologists at St. Mark’s have faculty appointments from the University of Utah and participate actively in medical student and resident education. Residents are exposed to a general community-based pathology practice. Pathology residents rotate through the surgical pathology service during their second year of training.

Intermountain Medical Center

As the flagship hospital of Intermountain Health Care, Intermountain Medical Center is the largest tertiary care hospital in the Salt Lake area, and sees the highest volume of surgical specimens. The experienced and enthusiastic faculty are closely affiliated with the University, providing upper-level residents with excellent elective training in surgical pathology, cardiac transplant pathology, dermatopathology, and electron microscopy.

Primary Children’s Medical Center (PCMC)

Located on the campus of the University of Utah and connected to University Hospital by a land bridge, PCMC is the only children’s hospital between Denver and the West Coast and serves as the clinical base for the Department of Pediatrics and pediatric subspecialists in other departments, as well as the regional referral center for pediatric medical and surgical problems, including perinatal and pediatric pathology. The pathologists based at PCMC hold the ABP special qualification in Pediatric Pathology and are full-time faculty of the University of Utah. Residents receive training in pediatric anatomic and clinical pathology at PCMC. Residents rotate through the autopsy service during their first year, and through surgical pathology and clinical pathology in subsequent years.

Utah State Medical Examiner

Also located on the University Health Science Center campus, the State Medical Examiner’s Office provides training in forensic pathology. Residents rotate at the ME Office for their required forensic pathology rotation where they perform forensic autopsies and are exposed to a large variety of medical/legal cases.
