Welcome letter from the Co-Chief Pathology Residents to prospective residency applicants

Dear Prospective Applicants!

Welcome to our website.  Our residency program is a great place for pathology training.  We offer two tracks: combined anatomic and clinical pathology, and clinical pathology only.  The combined track is integrated.  We are exposed to both clinical and anatomic fields from the beginning of our training.  In addition to our rotations, we have daily resident's morning conferences (please see our current conference schedule) that are geared towards residents' education.  They include unknown slide conferences, didactics by our faculty, and multiheaded scope teaching sessions.  Our curriculum offers nine months of elective time, in both anatomic and clinical pathology.  There are numerous research opportunities, in both clinical and anatomic pathology.

Our facilities are an asset to our training.  Anatomic pathology rotations take place at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah Hospital, Primary Children's Medical Center, Veteran's Administration Medical Center, St. Mark's Hospital and Intermountain Medical Center.  This offers an invaluable experience and diversity of surgical pathology specimens.  For our clinical rotations, we rotate through ARUP Laboratories, a state of the art national reference laboratory, and also through Intermountain Medical Center.  In addition to having their own working space on each rotation, residents also have a residents' room with a extensive reference library, computers, and microscopes, including a digital camera microscope.  Residents have their working space on every rotation.

Currently we have 19 residents; 16 in AP/CP, 2 in CP-Only, and 1 in AP-Only.  In addition to residents we have 16 pathology fellows in subspecialties of cytopathology, surgical pathology, clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, hematopathology, pediatric pathology, clinical cytogenetics and molecular genetic pathology.  We are a diverse group and come from all parts of the world.

Living in Salt Lake is easy and inexpensive.  Most residents live within Salt Lake City, 15-20 minutes away from the hospital.  Salt Lake is a growing city that offers many opportunities in cultural events, restaurants, and outdoor activities.  The best skiing is only half an hour away!  There are many hiking/biking trails, as close as right behind the hospital.  We would like to extend an offer for you to contact us with any questions or come visit us.
