|
Description of Research: Clinical studies in Tanzanian children with severe malaria are underway. Bedside and laboratory measurements test the role of microvascular physiology in the pathogenesis of this disease. Hypothesis: Deficiency of endothelial nitric oxide production promotes sequestration of parasitized RBCs in the microvessels of particular organs. Sequestration causes impaired oxygen delivery to, and lactic acid production from, affected tissues. Does this research involve human subjects or animals? Yes If yes, what is the protocol number? DMID Protocol Number: 05-0116 11/2008 |
