|
Description of Research: Genetic instability is regarded as a hallmark of human cancers, yet little is known about how cancer cells acquire genetic alterations. These genetic changes are ultimately responsible for the progressive behaviors of tumor cells. Oxygen deficiency in tissue or hypoxia is observed frequently in solid tumors. We recently reported that the hypoxia-inducible transcription factor, HIF-1α, mediates genetic instability by inhibiting transcription of DNA repair genes that safeguard genomic integrity. This study is to explore the mechanisms of tumor progression by taking advantage of a novel mode of HIF-1α action identified in our lab. Does this research involve human subjects or animals? Yes If yes, what is the protocol number? 07-02008; 08-07003 11/2008 |
