The roles of variation in genes that encode components of the renin-angiotensin system in essential hypertension.

We are investigating the roles of variation in genes that encode components of the renin-angiotensin system in essential hypertension.  We are searching for genes that underlie susceptibility to juvenile idiopathic arthritis (in collaboration with Sampath Prahalad, MD) and inflammatory bowel disease (with Steve Guthery, MD), schizophrenia (with Bryan Mowry, MD), and several ophthalmologic disorders (with Kang Zhang, MD).  We are also investigating the effects of mobile elements, such as Alu and LINE1 elements, on processes such as recombination, deletion, and gene conversion.  We are analyzing human genetic variation using 250K and 1 MB SNP chips in human populations throughout the world, and we have recently intitiated a collaboration with the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation to analyze up to several thousand additional human samples.
