Quality of life in children after traumatic brain injury.

Quality of life measures after traumatic brain injury has been well characterized in adults but there are few studies measuring quality of life in children.  The direct medical as well as socioeconomic costs from the more then 435,000 childhood emergency room visits, 37,000 hospital admissions and 2,500 deaths from traumatic brain injury occurring annually in the United States is huge.  Returning patients back to a normal state of health as well as to their pre-injury active and productive lives is the goal of trauma care.  It is therefore vital that the effects of our therapy not only translate into improved survival, but optimal quality of life and function as well.
