Clinical Chemistry
Dina Greene, Ph.D.
Dina began to explore biological science in college at the University of Florida where she majored in Microbiology and Cell Science. Next, she ventured to graduate school at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she completed her Ph.D. with a focus on the structure/function relationships of enzymes. In addition to a deep interest in science and research, Dina is an experienced yoga practitioner and teacher. Combined, these passions allow Dina to explore multiple facets of medicine and healing. She is excited to plant her Southern roots in Utah soil.
Clinical Cytogenetics
Naseem Uddin, M.D.
Naseem was born in Karachi, Pakistan. He received his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery) degree with honors from Karachi Medical & Dental College, Karachi, Pakistan, in 1999. After finishing a 1-year internship at Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Naseem decided to pursue further training in the United States. He completed his Anatomical & Clinical Pathology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, in 2007. Subsequently, he finished his Pediatric Pathology fellowship at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas/UT Southwestern in 2008. Due to his interest in cytogenetics he decided to complete a formal fellowship in Clinical Cytogenetics. He started the cytogenetics fellowship at UT Southwestern & later transferred to the University of Utah/ARUP Laboratories Clinical Cytogenetics Fellowship Program. Naseem is excited to train in one of the largest academic reference laboratory in United States and to be affiliated with one of the premier medical genetic programs in the country. His interests include cricket, photography and reading. Having spent most of his time in southern part of the country, Salt Lake City’s weather and topography itself is a new experience and he is looking forward to great adventures!
Reha Toydemir, M.D., Ph.D.
Reha was born in Ankara, Turkey. He graduated from the University of Ankara, School of Medicine in 1994. His intense interest in genetics coupled with frustration in trying to provide answers when treating patients with genetic disorders drew him into research. He focused on research in Turkey pursuing a fellowship in the Turkey-Israel Student Exchange Program and the Higher Education Council of Turkey fellowship. He then completed a Graduate Research Fellowship at the University of Utah in 2005 and completed his Ph.D. in Human Genetics in 2006. Since that time he has been a Postdoctoral Associate at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the Human Genetics Department at the University of Utah. His goal is to become a human geneticist and use his experience and knowledge to develop new tests and deliver the results to patients and their care providers.
Clinical Medical Genetics
Amy Calhoun, M.D.
Amy was born in Forest City, Iowa, as an unanticipated twin. She has had a long-term interest in medicine, starting around the age of five. She holds B.A.s in biology and German from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, but a summer research project with Dr. Marc Williams at Gundersen-Lutheran Health Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, inspired her interest in medical genetics. Amy then attended Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota, where she received her M.D. Amy completed her pediatrics residency at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital, and was selected to serve an additional year as Chief Resident in Pediatrics. Amy is excited to report that she is a board-certified pediatrician! A congenital chronic upper-midwesterner, Amy is thrilled to be in Utah to meet new people, learn to be a geneticist, and see mountains!
Clinical Molecular Genetics
Steven Dobrowolski, Ph.D.
Steve was born in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science Pre-Professional Biology degree from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. In 1993, he earned his Ph.D. in Regulatory Biology from Cleveland State University, program with the Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His areas of special interest include phenylketonuria, BH4 synthesis/recycling defects, and other inborn errors of metabolism, and newborn screening.
Steve has lived in Park City, Utah, for seven years and hopes never to leave.
Cytopathology
Brent Huddleston, M.D.
Brent was born in Salem, Oregon, and grew up in Homedale, Idaho. He received a B.S. in Microbiology and Spanish from the University of Idaho in 2000. He earned his M.D. at the University of Utah School of Medicine in 2004. His postgraduate medical training consists of a clinical internship year at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, Texas, and a four-year AP/CP pathology residency at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center that he completed in 2009. Brent enjoys fly fishing and backpacking and is glad to be staying in Salt Lake City for a cytopathology fellowship.
Hematopathology
Eric Duncavage, M.D.
Eric is from Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University, majoring in physics and chemistry. Eric attended the University of Tennessee College of Medicine where he was awarded a Howard Hughes Pre-doctoral Fellowship to study cancer cell biology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He completed his combined anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Washington University in St. Louis in 2008. Eric is currently a molecular pathology fellow at Washington University. His research interests include viral-induced oncogenesis, prognostic factors in myelodysplastic syndrome, and the application of next generation sequencing to clinical diagnostics. Eric is pleased to join the University of Utah for a hematopathology fellowship.
Jeremy Wallentine, M.D.
Jeremy was born and raised in Utah. He attended Westminster College in Salt Lake City and graduated with a B.S. in Biology in 2001. He attended the University of Utah School of Medicine where he received his M.D. in 2005. Jeremy received his residency training in the combined AP/CP program at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center and ARUP Laboratories where he also functioned as an Assistant Medical Director in the Hematologic Flow Cytometry Laboratory. In his free time Jeremy enjoys spending time with his wife, road bike racing, mountain biking and scuba diving.
Immunology
Aaruni Khanolkar, MBBS, Ph.D.
Aaruni was born in India where he also completed his medical degree prior to joining the National Institute of Immunology as a Research Fellow. He obtained his Ph.D. in Immunology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and did post-doctoral research fellowships at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Most recently he worked as a research scientist at the University of Iowa. His academic interest is centered around examining the dynamics of host-pathogen interactions with a special emphasis on T and B cell responses generated during respiratory viral infections. Outside of academics, he has an abiding interest in 21st century geo-politics, nature and wildlife conservancy issues, and is a big fan of 'staycations' which afford the opportunity to soak up the local culture. He is excited to be in SLC and is looking forward to a productive and enjoyable experience at the University of Utah and Salt Lake City.
Medical Microbiology
Jeffrey Bender, M.D.
Jeff was born in Los Angeles, California. After growing up in San Diego, he attended Stanford University and earned a B.S. in biology. He went on to attend UC San Diego School of Medicine where he earned his M.D., and more importantly, met his wife. He completed his pediatric residency and pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Utah. His primary research interests lie in the exploration of the human genetic basis for susceptibility to infectious diseases. He enjoys mountain biking, being beaten by his wife on the tennis courts, and playing with their two young children. They are all very happy to be staying in Utah.
Robert Schlaberg, M.D.
Robert was born in Konstanz, Germany, which - similar to Salt Lake City - is on a big lake and close to the mountains. After he graduated from medical school in Wuerzburg, Germany, he came to New York City for a postdoc in a virology lab at Columbia University, where he also did his residency training in clinical pathology. He is currently working in Dr. Ila Singh’s lab in the Department of Pathology studying a novel retrovirus and its possible role in prostate cancer. He is excited to start fellowship training in clinical microbiology and to live so close to the mountains again.
Adam Barker, Ph.D.
Adam was born in Denver Colorado. He received his B.S. in Microbiology from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. Adam did a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Microbiology and Microbial Genetics. He was a Research Assistant Professor for one year at the University of Utah Department of Biology. Adam is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Peter Jensen's lab at the University of Utah. He loves the outdoors, especially the mountains. He is a huge animal person that rescues retired racing greyhounds with his wife, Elke. Adam and his wife, Elke, could not wait to move back to the west from the east coast. They love Salt Lake City and the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah.
Marc Couturier, Ph.D.
Marc was born in Greene, Maine and earned his B.Sc. Biology degree with honors from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada in 2003. In 2008, Marc completed his Ph.D. in the department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada, studying Helicobacter pylori pathogenesis. Following his Ph.D., he worked as a research associate for the Alberta Provincial Laboratory for Public Health in the molecular diagnostics unit investigating regional cases of non-O157 enterohemorrhagic E. coli. Marc and his wife Brianne are avid hikers and skiers, and are excited to move to Salt Lake City to take advantage of the many amazing outdoor opportunities (in addition to a much warmer climate).
Molecular Genetic Pathology
Archana Agarwal, M.D.
Archana was born in India. She did her medical school training at Assam Medical College in India. Archana completed three years of post-doctoral research training at the University of Iowa before joining the AP/CP residency at the University of Utah. She did a Hematopathology Fellowship at the University of Utah from 2007-08. Archana loves cooking and exploring new places.
Jeremy Crim, M.D.
Jeremy is a native Texan, and was born in Dallas, Texas, where he continued to stay for his undergraduate education with a B.S. in Biology at the University of Texas at Dallas. During his undergraduate work he continued to foster his interest in genetics by assisting in the Human Genome Project at UT Southwestern. He continued further south for his medical education at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where he completed medical school and his combined AP/CP pathology residency. Jeremy is an avid reader, favoring historical and alternative history novels. After eight years of flat endless ocean, Jeremy is excited to be in Utah with magnificent tall mountains, and looks forward to attempting to climb them (or at least hiking up some steep trails).
Pediatric Pathology
David Spence, M.D.
David went to college at Texas A&M and earned a B.S. in electrical engineering. After graduation he attended graduate school in electrical engineering and began working on MRI systems at the Magnetic Resonance Systems Lab at Texas A&M. During grad school his interests shifted to medicine. He obtained his M.D. from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. His residency training in Pathology at Washington University in St. Louis gave him the opportunity to learn and train with many excellent individuals. David was born in San Antonio, but his enjoyment of the outdoors and Pediatric Pathology have drawn him to Utah.
Surgical Pathology
William C. Klingensmith, IV, M.D.
Bill was born in St. Louis and grew up in Colorado. He received a B.A. in psychology from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada in 2003, and completed a pathology residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock in 2008. He is currently in the pediatric pathology fellowship at Children’s Hospital in Boston. Bill and his wife Missy are excited to move to Salt Lake City.
