About ARUP

ARUP Laboratories is a national clinical and anatomic pathology reference laboratory and an enterprise of the University of Utah and its Department of Pathology. With 2,000 employees, ARUP offers in excess of 2,000 tests and test combinations, ranging from routine screening tests to highly esoteric molecular and genetic assays, for patients throughout the country. ARUP's clients include more than half of the nation's university teaching hospitals and children's hospitals, including Stanford University Health Services, Emory University, the University of Pennsylvania, Childrens Hospital of Boston, and the University of Washington Medical Center. Clients also include multihospital groups, major commercial laboratories, group purchasing organizations, military and government facilities, and major clinics.

ARUP is a worldwide leader in innovative laboratory research and development, led by the efforts of the ARUP Institute for Clinical and Experimental Pathology™. Through ARUP Consult®, Department of Pathology faculty share their diagnostic testing expertise with clinicians around the world.

The association with ARUP benefits the Department of Pathology in numerous ways:

  • Support for assay development and other translational research
  • Access to patient specimens representing a huge range of diseases
  • Resident and fellow education covering a full range of esoteric testing
  • Salary support for faculty and fellows.

History of ARUP Laboratories

ARUP Laboratories was created in 1984 by the University of Utah School of Medicine's Department of Pathology faculty to support the academic missions of education, research, and service. It was initially comprised of fewer than 100 employees and 25 faculty members. ARUP's affiliation with the University was the first of its kind, and presented the unique challenge of balancing academic and business functions.

ARUP's directive was to financially support the Department of Pathology by fulfilling the dual role of laboratory testing for the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics while at the same time aggressively pursuing research into the cutting-edge technology needed to establish ARUP as a leading national reference laboratory specializing in esoteric testing.

Through progressive and forward-thinking leadership, ARUP has grown far beyond original expectations, growing approximately 10% average per year growth over its lifespan while remaining completely self-funded. ARUP Laboratories has established itself as a role model for bridging the gap between academic medicine and successful business enterprise.
